Thursday 29th December – Bed Time Part 2

I had brighter horizons today. Alex and I had planned an afternoon activity to the nearby Classic Remise, a place where fancy and historic cars are stored by the rich and famous. That gave me the morning to rest and the afternoon to play. Sabrina and Alex left the bedroom to me and set up their air mattress in the dining room to give them a better chance at sleeping so this morning we had breakfast around the living room table. Another huge spread of beautiful food, this time I managed a piece of toast with some butter and a croissant but I wasn’t being too ambitious yet.

Breakfast was rather late so it was lunch time before we knew it. I’d whiled away the morning sitting on the couch in and out of a doze. Alex went out to meet a friend for coffee and the grandparents were at their weekly swimming class, so it was just me and Sabrina. She made me some toast and honey which was nice after all the plain stuff I’d been eating. When Oma got home, she told us honey was a bad idea so we felt like little kids who had been left alone too long. After sleeping a bit more on the couch, I went back to bed, still not able to get my body to function properly.

When I woke, the house was silent and it was properly dark. I’d obviously missed the chance of an outing to the Classic Remise. I thought maybe I’d slept right through to midnight and everyone was asleep but when I got up, I found Alex in the living room. Oma and Opa had gone out for a family dinner and Sabrina was out meeting a friend. Seems like I am the only one without a social life! I kept Alex company a while before he went out to see his friends again. He grew up in Berlin, so he was happy to be catching up with old mates. Before he left, he made me some hot beef stock to have with my rice and put on a movie for me. He can be a nice boy when he tries.

Sabrina came home shortly before he left so it was just us girls. Sabrina studied as I watched my kids movie. Eventually Sabrina left to join Alex for dinner and I was home alone. Movie finished, I wasn’t tired enough to go to sleep, so I watched an old F1 race which was about half way through when Oma and Opa came home. Language barrier! I just turned my screen towards Opa and he stood and watched for a while, he was a racing fan just like me.

They went to bed shortly after they arrived home, but before they did so, Opa came to me with an open jar of what looked like candy. It was ginger pieces for sucking on. He held the jar out towards me encouragingly and I graciously took one piece from the jar and popped it in my mouth. “Nein!” he said. “Two! Two!” Okay, I took another from the jar and placed it on the table. He was putting the lid back on when we heard Oma yell from the other room, “Three! Three!” so I had to take another one. I smiled and said my best thankyou and goodnight and he was off. I spat the ginger out of my mouth as soon as he was gone. If there’s one thing I can’t stand to eat, it is ginger.

Eventually the F1 tired me out so I was back in bed for yet more sleep.

Historical F1 Fact: Using a single set of tyres for an entire race makes for incredibly boring pitstops in which twenty guys stand around a car and look at the rubber they so desperately want to remove and put back on within two seconds.
