Wednesday 28th December – Bed Time

Poor Alex had a bad night, with Sabrina and I in perfectly synchronised raspy breathing and an uncomfortable bed, he’d retreated to the living room couch in the early hours of the morning for some reprieve. I woke up to find my virus had returned, thankfully only in the form of diarrhoea, not vomiting, but I felt poorly and couldn’t each much. Before breakfast, I thought I’d take a walk outside for some fresh air. It was a beautiful, wet, cold, grey day but I just wandered the streets a while. After I’d gone back in, Alex was ready to walk round the corner to the bakery for some breakfast rolls so I joined him. We also stopped in at a pharmacy for him to get some preventative drugs to keep himself from all the sickness around him.

At breakfast, which is a dinner-style sit-down affair, Oma presented both soft- and hard-boiled eggs, toast, the bread rolls, salmon, salami, cheese and at least five different spreads. She couldn’t comprehend that I only wanted plain toast with nothing on it, all I could stomach. Alex explained as best he could and she came round. Opa was in equal disbelief that I wasn’t eating anything.

After brekkie, Alex set me up on one of the couches in the living room with a blanket and I slept. When I was done with that, I retired to my room to sleep the rest of the afternoon. I couldn’t eat anything and the effort it was taking my body to digest two pieces of toast was too much so bed was the only solution. By the time I woke up, it was just dark. Amazed that I’d slept the whole day, I joined the rest of the family in the dining room where they were sitting down to a dinner of Christmas leftovers. Oma had thoughtfully made me some plain white rice, which I managed half a bowl of. I drank as much water as I could.

It was a quiet evening. Sabrina did some studying, Alex was playing on his computer and the TV was on in the living room. I sat amongst the atmosphere for a while, then retreated back to bed where I didn’t have any trouble sleeping through the night despite all the rest I’d already had.

Sicko Fact: It is possible to sleep for 18 hours in a single day.
